Oceanic Whitetip Sharks of Cat Island
Time: May 8, 2011 at 6am to May 14, 2011 at 7pm
Location: Cat Island, Bahamas Website or Map: http://bigfishphotographyexpe… Event Type: shark, diving, expedition Organized By: Andy Murch In the early summer months, oceanic whitetip sharks aggregate just off Cat Island on the eastern edge of the Bahamas. Rarely seen this close to shore, Its thought that the oceanics inadvertently swim along the coast in search of migrating tuna and other pelagic fishes. Join an expedition with Photojournalist Andy Murch to encounter one of the most magnificent predators in the ocean.
Unlike most epic shark diving expeditions, this is a land based trip. Each day we will venture out to sea to encounter oceanic whitetip sharks and other shark species and then return to shore in the evenings. We will be staying in a comfortable beach house and have the chance to explore this beautiful and largely undiscovered island. Although the trip will focus primarily on oceanic whitetip encounters, we will have a good chance of seeing other species such as tigers, lemons, reef sharks, bulls and more.
With Cat Island sitting so close to the edge of the continental shelf, virtually anything can swim by. While in the water we will use both scuba and snorkeling techniques to get up close to the oceanics. This is a blue water encounter where the bottom may be too deep to be visible. To add more dimension to the expedition, we will also chum closer to shore where other species are more common and we may also attempt to explore some of Cat Island's rarely dived coral reefs.
