お誕生日会

明日は僕の誕生日。
だけど明日は月曜日。
今日は日曜日。

ということで、友達3人と僕で、お誕生日会をしました。
1人はメアリー、ハウスメイトです。
もう一人はロン、近所の友達です。
もう一人は、あ、名前出す許可を取っていませんでした。隣町の日本人の友達です。

今日は、朝起きて朝ごはんを食べていたら、玄関をノックする音が聞こえました。
「はーい」と言って（←超日本語じゃね？）玄関に行くと、少年が2人立っていました。
何かいろいろしゃべってくれましたが、聞き取れた単語は「サッカー」だけ。（←まじかよ）
何回か質問して聞いてみたところ、どうやら2分後（a couple of munites laterだそうです）に家の前の道路を挟んだ向こうにある空き地でサッカーをやるから来ないか、ということらしいです。。
OKと言って、急いで朝ごはんを食べ終わり歯を磨いて着替えて外へ出ました。
すると4人の少年と1人の大人が。
そこで息が切れるほどがんばってサッカーをしてきました。
その後、1人の大人と2人の少年の家に、誘われるまま遊びに行きました。僕のうちから３軒隣り。
そこで朝ごはんをご馳走になって、「また来週の月曜日に遊ぼうねー」と言って家を出ました。

家に帰ってしばらくすると友達のロンが現れて、「自宅のパソコンからネットにつなげてSNS（ソーシャルネットワーキングサービス。mixiなど。）にアクセスして写真をアップしたいんだけど、うまくいかないよー。」とのこと。
ロンのうちに行ってそのサイトにアクセスし、女性の写真を一緒に検索し、「あ、この人かわいー」的な話をしていました。
ロンと一緒に僕の家に戻ると午後2時。
お誕生日会の始まりです。

日本人の友達は、チーズケーキとお寿司（アボカドとスモークサーモンのお寿司）を作って持ってきてくれました。
さらに料理の本までプレゼントしてくれました！すげーーーー
90年前に初版された、ニュージーランドの伝統的な料理の本ですよー。
クッキーやケーキ、パイなどのベイキングが得意な女性なんですよ、そのお方は。
なので今度は僕がなんかベイキングをトライしてみんなを招待したいなと。

メアリーも、ケーキを作ってくれました。ろうそくの立っているやつね。
そしてさらに、メアリーは午前中に近くの市場（今日だけのお菓子専門市場です）に行って、別の種類のケーキを買ってきてくれました。
なのでその場にはケーキが3つ。びびるなーーー。
そして、ナチョスというメキシカン料理を作ってくれました。
ちょい辛で、ポテチにドロドロの豆のルーみたいのを乗せます。さらにクリームとアボカドを乗せます。うまい。

ワインで乾杯。
午後の光とワイングラス、白ワインがとてもキレイでした。

ロンはこの村の景色を描いた絵をプレゼントしてくれました。日本に戻った後でも思い出せるように、とのことでした。すばらしい。

メアリーは誕生日プレゼントを明日くれるそうです。

ベランダでパーティーをしていたので、近所の人が通りかかって「Happy Birthday」的なあいさつをしてくれました。

バースデイパーティが終わった後は、夕暮れ時になったので夕日を見に浜辺へ。
徒歩5分です。

浜辺に馬みたいな足跡があったんですが、馬が浜辺を歩いていたのかな。。。。
確かに近くに馬は飼われているけれど、浜辺を散歩するかなあ？

まいっか。
とりあえずそのパーティはとても奇跡的でした。
いい天気、みんな健康、4人の成人が時間を合わせて、笑顔で集まれたことが奇跡みたいな確率で、人生にそう何度もあるもんじゃないよなーーと思うのでした。

So when I try it with some bay King this time and want to invite everybody.

Mary made a cake, too. It is the standing guy of the candle.
And Mary went to the market (it is a market specialized in a cake today) nearby in the morning more and bought the cake of another kind.
So in the place three cakes. びびるなー ーー.
And I made Mexican cooking called ナチョス.
In 辛, I put that I want to watch the roux of a muddy bean on the potato chip a little. Furthermore, I ride cream and avocado. It is good.

I toast it with wine.
The light of the afternoon and a wineglass, white wine were very pure.

Because I had a party in a porch, a neighboring person happened to pass and did greetings of "Happy Birthday".

To watch the setting sun after a birthday party was over because it was dusk; to the beach.

地元の新聞に僕の記事が載りました

僕はニュージーランドの南島の西側という、全く栄えていない地域で細々と暮らしております。
そんな西側地域の一角に、Buller Riverという川があり、その辺りの地名にはよく「Bulller」という言葉が使われています。
そんなBullerのさらに北部限定の新聞で、「Northern Buller Community Resource Centre Newsletter」というものがあります。

その新聞の編集者からハウスメイトのメアリーさんのところにメールが来ました。
「異文化交流をしているそうですね。それについて記事を書いてくれない？メアリーでもその日本人でも。」
ということで僕がつたない英語で書くことになりました。

テーマはGranity（僕の住む村です）の人々。
親切でいい所だあ、的なことを書きました。
もちろん本心でそう思っていますよｗｗ

で、書いたら新聞に載った！そりゃそうですが＾＾；
載ってからカフェに行ったらそこの店長のスティーブに「見たよー、良かったよ、記事。」とか言ってもらいました。
そして後日ヒッチハイキングしたら、「見たよ、記事。良かったよー」って。＾＾
あと、この家に掃除と皿洗いをしに来てくれる女性も「記事見たわよー」的な。
すげー反応だあ。

Hi, I'm Hiroyuki and from Japan.
I'm happy you are reading this article.

I'd like to talk about Granity here.
This is because I only know Granity and a little bit Westport.
When I arrived at the airport in Christchurch, I didn't stay in the city but went directly to Granity by bus.
And I have lived in Granity for 1 month.

I am often asked the reason I selected Granity as a place to stay.
A lot of people seem to be wondering if Granity deserves to be selected.
But I think Granity is quite good for learning English conversation.

The first good point is that there are no other Asian people in this village.
So maybe I'm highly visible.
And lots of people easily remember me.
They are friendly and kind, and they talk to me often.
And they forgive me my bad English.
So I can easily make friends with people.

And the second good point is the population of this village is really small.
I can see the same people every day.
If I stayed in a city, it would be difficult to see the same people again by chance.
But here we often pass each other in the street.
People greet me every time I pass someone here.
I think it's a good custom.
I lived in Yokohama in Japan, which is really big city near Tokyo.
But it's really rare for strangers to greet each other in my city.

Well, about people in Granity.
After I came here and had conversation with some people, I felt people are generally modest, genial and sedate.
I was a little pleasantly surprised at the character.
In Japan, sometimes we Japanese criticize ourselves because we don't express our own opinion and want to be the same personality as others.
We are scared that we're different from others.
And we read some newspapers and they say "Japanese don't express their own opinion. We have to modify our character and follow the one of English speaking countries.
We feel inferiror to people from English speaking countries, for example, USA, England, Canada and New Zealand as well.
Our contemporary culture is mainly from abroad, especially from English speaking countries.
FOR EXAMPLE We don't have Kimono (Japanese traditional formal wear) in our workplace.
And we buy CD with the style of English speaking countries.

So, I think we have some kind of fear of them.
And I had it of English speakers, too.
I was a little bit expecting that English speakers always shout loudly and claim their own opinion and rights every day.
But I was short of my expectation.
Actually they are not too assertive, and they are really gentle.
And that was so good for me.
Perhaps they are not so different from Japanese as I expected.

I don't think I can generalise because I don't know so many people in Granity.
So, I'd like to give 2 concrete examples.
And it would be good if you could generalise from them.

About Mary, my housemate.
She is direct and open.
I mean, I can easily know what she's feeling right now, and that what she said is true.
She tells me every truth directly and I think her personality is good for communication.
When she's happy, her face and whole body look happy. And she seems happy throughout the body.
When she's unhappy, her face and whole mood look unhappy. And she says "Oh dear" from every part of the body.
This type of person is rare in Japan.
Our expression is very small.
We don't have as big actions as her, for example, to open our hands and to have a big smile.

She's expressing from inside to outside, but she is open from outside to inside.
She can accept what others say easily, if you tell her directly.
I can say so at both situations of serious and daily.

About Ron, my friend.
Recently I think he has similar esthetic to Japanese.
This is the esthetic of indirectness.
I can't remember the concrete example now, but I don't think he is a type of person who tells all he's thinking about.
He doesn't talk about it directly but empathy is hidden behind his mood and between the lines.
He's not directly insisting his own esthetic.
Perhaps his mood or suggesting type of talk make me feel so.
I heard there is chivalry in Europe, when I was in Japan.
And I heard from Ron that his ancestors are from Europe.
There is Samurai spirit in Japan as well.
I don't have a lot of knowledge of both, but perhaps the spirit of indirectness is a similarity.

ダブルベッドの相方で寝る猫

僕はニュージーランドの田舎町にホームステイしていますが、その家の僕の部屋にはダブルベッドがあります。
お客さんが２人ペアで来てもいいようにだそうです。

で、僕のベッドは割りと広いのですが、毎晩イザベラというメス猫がそのベッドの上で寝ています。
いつもは掛け布団の上なのですが、最近なついてきたらしく、昨晩は仲良く布団に入って寝ました。

ということで昨晩の写真です。

The cat which sleeps with the companion of the double bed

I stay with New Zealand county town, but there is a double bed in my room of the house.
Two visitors may seem to come in a pair.

Well, my bed is large comparatively, but a female cat called Isabella sleeps every night on the bed.
It was the top of covers, but I seem to have come recently and I entered the futon peacefully last night and always slept.

It is the photograph of the ということで last night.

初春の初めてのラッパスイセンを花瓶に

いやー、ニュージーランドに滞在している26歳男性です。
まだまだ寒くて、冬でねえ。。。
特に今日は寒いんですよ、南風が吹いて。
なんか書いていることが逆でおもしろいですよね。
寒いのに南風とか。
日本は夏なのに寒いとか。

メアリーさんがdaffodil（ラッパスイセン）の花を花瓶にさして持ってきてくれました。
これは、家の周りでは初めて咲いたものです。
ラッパスイセンは早春に花が咲くそうです。

これは、8月10日に撮影した、切る前のラッパスイセン。

ということで一つ、和歌を詠んでみたいと思います。

初春を 知らせるラッパ スイセンに 我の心も再スタートかな

※初春は、「はつはる」と読んでほしいです。

Mary put a flower of daffodil (trumpet narcissus) in a vase and brought it.
This bloomed for the first time in the circumference of the house.

I made Waka, Japanese traditional poem with rythm, about daffodil.

カレーです。


小麦粉や牛乳を足したりして、ドロドロなカレーを作る方法がだんだん分かってきました。
この日はビールとカレーという王道を再現したかったんですよ。
日本は夏だろうし、僕もちょっと日本な気分になりました。

この日もカレーを作りました。
メアリーさんはカレーに飽きたらしく、自分でトーストを焼いていました。

僕にもおすそ分けしてくれました。
そして僕は、カレーとパスタ。一度試してみたかったんですよ。
ちょっとナシかな。。。＾＾；

ローズマリーを入れた玉子焼きと、トーストと、チーズスコーン。
コーヒーはインスタントじゃないのを、メアリーさんが作ってくれました。最高です。
