現代は、人類の生存そのものの危機が切実に憂慮される時代である。しかも、憂慮の声が日に日に高まっているにもかかわらず、危機はますます深刻化している。このような時代に、哲学や文学のはたすべき役割はきわめて大きいといわなければならないだろう。そして現状は、この危機をもたらしている元凶として、科学技術万能の近代合理主義を批判する声が大きく、しかもそこから、「非合理なもの」への志向が異常に肥大しているようにおもえる。しかし私たちは、現代社会の危機の根底には、人間の自由と平等という民主主義の理念の国家権力による蹂躪があり、それへの民衆の抵抗の不徹底さがあるのだと考える。とくにわが国では、この自由と平等の理念がなお未成熟、不徹底であることを、私たちはみずからの問題として痛感しないわけにはいかない。したがって、文学の課題も可能性も、この民主主義の理念を社会生活の具体にそくして徹底して追求し、実践するところにあると考える。

Today, the human race is heading toward extinction and, although voices of concern increase daily, the situation continues to deteriorate.
Philosophy and literature have a large role to play at such a time.
Criticism of modern rationalism, which views technology as omnipotent, has increased , giving rise to speculation on "the irrational".
Contemporary society's crisis has been brought about by the power of nation-states, which have trampled upon the concepts of democracy, liberty and equality, while public resistance has been lacking.
Understanding of the concepts of liberty and equality has remained shallow and superficial especially in Japan.
Literature, with all its attendant possibilities, should be based on real life and it is our duty to pursue, practice and reinforce true democracy.

The derivation of a word 'Ashikabi' in Japanese: ashikabi no goto moeagaru mono [Kojiki]: Something sprouting like a reed. <in the Kojiki>
Kojiki: The oldest extant history of Japan, the Kojiki was compiled by imperial order by Ono Yasumaro and submitted to Emperor Gemmei in A. D. 712. It relates the history of Japan from the age of the gods down to the reign of Empress Suiko (592-628), but largely consists of myth and legend rather than real history.
