"YOUTH"
Youth is not time of life.....It is state of mind;
it is a temper of the will, a quality of the imagina-
tion, a vigor of the emotions.a predominance of
courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure
over love of ease.
Nobody glows old by merely living a number of
years; people glow old only by deserting their ideals.
Years wrinkle the sikin, but to give up enthusiasm
wrinkles the soul. Worry, doubt, self-distrust, faer
and dispair.....these are the long, long years that bow
the head and turn the glowing spirit back to dust.
Whether seventy or sixteen ,there is in every
being's heart the love of wonder,the sweet amaze-
ment at the stars and the starlike things and
throughts, the undaunted challenge of events, the
unfailing childlike appetite for what next, and the
joy and the game of life.
You are as young as your faith, as old as your
doubt; as young as your self-confidence. as old as
your fear,as young as hope, as old as your
despair.
So long as your heart recieves messages of beauty,
cheer, courage, grandeur and power from the earth,
from man and from the infinite, so long you are
young.
When the wires are all down and all the centaral
place of your heart is covered with the snows of
pessimism and the ice of cynicism. then you are
grown old indeed and may God have mercy on your
soul.

第2回しまごと発見隊（主催・原の辻遺跡保存等協議会）がこのほど開かれ、石田町、松永記念館・二
階展示室がリニューアルオープンしたこともあり、多様な角度から紹介された。
この松永安左エ門翁＝写真＝が訳したサミユエル・ウルマンの詩「青春」は、政界はもちろん、多くの人々に愛されている非常に有名な詩であり、松永翁が、あのマッカーサー将軍の部屋に掲げられていたこの詩を見て、その真髄を読み取って訳し、伝えた精神は、これからの壱岐市づくり・地域振興はもちろん、起業を考える人たちにとって、また、人生にとっても指針となるべきものではないか。（情報源壱岐日報H19.8.27)
