いきなりABBAネタになるが、新作映画の”MANMA MIA here we go again” のサウンドトラック盤に映画で使われなかった”The Day Before You Came” が入っている。聞いてみたらメリル・ストリープが情感豊かに歌い上げ、すばらしい出来ではないか。
独身女性が恋人に会う前の単調な日々を「当時はその単調さにすら気づいていなかった」と歌うラブソングだが詩に漂う虚無感がすさまじく、芸術的。そしてえらく長い曲だ。
この曲は82年にABBA最後の曲としてシングルリリースされたが、詩が暗いというか、おそらく芸術的過ぎて一部の国以外ではあまりヒットせずに終わった。たぶんABBA末期の多くの曲と同様に世の中の先を行き過ぎてしまったのだろう。その後にリリースされた”THE ALBUMS”のBOXでも最後のBONUSのCDにかろうじて入っていて、なんだか忘れられがちだった。
私も新作を聴いた36年前は「なんか暗い、理屈っぽい」と聞き流した。しかし今回のサントラ盤では６０代のメリルが母国語の英語で歌い、情感豊かな素晴らしい出来になった。
当時はアグネサがソロで歌い、もちろん彼女はとてもうまかったが20代のきれいな声にこの詩は向いていなかった。そもそも単なる日常の繰り返しといううんざりした感じを彼女が歌うのをファンも求めなかっただろう。僕ら当時のABBAファンの多くも20代。「サインすべき書類が山のように」というオフィスワーカーの単調な毎日の気分がまだわからなかった。だが、今や僕らもこの曲の虚無感がずきずきわかる年になった。まさにグッドタイミング、メリルのおかげで名曲がよみがえった。
それにしてもビョルンとベニーはやっぱり天才だ。当時20代のイケイケのヤングアーティストがなぜ独身会社員の内心のひそかな悲哀を知っていたのか。しかもそれをなぜラブソングに使おうと思ったのか（明るくないし）。資本主義に勝てるのは愛しかない？とでも考えたのか？いや当時、彼らはむしろソ連の脅威を気にしていたはずだが・・。ともあれ、みなさん、一度、この曲聞いてみてください。英語のヒアリングの勉強教材としても最高です。ちなみにメリルストリープのABBAソングではあと、WINNERが出色の出来です。あれもおすすめ。
