今をときめくオバマ大統領の演説のうまさには定評がありますが、私はMartin Luther King牧師のこの有名な演説が好きです。格が違います。Famous speech by Martin Luther King Jrhttp://jp.youtube.com/v/PbUtL_0vAJkMartin Luther King Junior's Birthday was on January fifteenth. He was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. His father was a Baptist minister and his mother was a school teacher. He studied at Morehouse College in Atlanta and he earned a Ph.D. at Boston University. Dr. King worked very hard to end discrimination against black people in the United States. In 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, he led a boycott of the city's buses because the front seats were only for white people. Black people could only sit in the back seats. After about one year, the rule was changed and the boycott ended. In 1963, Dr. King made his most famous speech in Washington D.C. in front of more than 200,000 people. He said: " I have a dream... " The crowd was very excited. In 1964, Dr. King won the Nobel Prize for peace. But, on April fourth, 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. was shot and killed at a motel in Memphis, Tennessee. It was a very sad day in the United States. Today, Dr King's birthday is a public holiday. Usually, we celebrate it on a different day so that we can have a day off from school or work. This year it was January 20th. Dr. King is gone, but we can always remember him, and we must always remember his dream. 「私には夢がある。いつの日かジョージアのこの赤い丘の上で元奴隷の子供達と元奴隷の所有者の子供達が一緒に同じテーブルにつけることを・・・。」I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.I HAVE A DREAM THAT ONE DAY ON THE RED HILLS OF GEORGIA, SONS OF FORMER SLAVES AND THE SONS OF FORMER SLAVE OWNERS WILL BE ABLE TO SIT DOWN TOGETHER AT THE TABLE OF BROTHERHOOD. |
