New Fixing Tool (新しい修理用の道具)

When we were relaxing at home one Sunday evening, there was a phone call. My partner picked it up and said, “Hello? Oh, hi… oh, OK, I’ll be right down!” No sooner than he hung up the phone, he put his shoes on and jumped out of the door. “What’s happening??”, I had no idea what he was doing and I waited for him return. He got back soon and said, “Can you guess why I went down?” “Oh, no, I have no idea”, I said and he showed me a very funny shaped tool with a broad smile. “What’s that? What it’s for?”, I totally couldn’t see what it was for. He said, “Ditmar brought this to us to fix the wooden floor!”. Yes, it was a special tool to fix our floor. For some reason, some of the planks of our wooden floor in front of the fireplace had started sliding apart and there were some crevasses between each board. We tried to push the boards together, but they were too hard to move. A few days before, Ditmar came to check it out and he tried to fix it with a big hammer and a special tool, but it didn’t work well. He said he had another special and better tool to fix these kinds of crevasses at home somewhere, but he couldn’t find it at that time. He seemed to find the tool finally. “Wow, sounds excellent! Then we’ll be able to fix the crevasses at last!”, I was excited and he started using it right away. However, unfortunately, it didn’t work well, either. When he used the tool, he had to use a hammer and it made a big noise when he hit the tool with it. As it was an early evening already, we gave up using it because we thought the noise might annoy the neighbours. Next morning, after my partner went to work, I decided to try using the tool. As it was a weekday morning, I didn’t need to worry about making noise because most people must have gone to work. It took a little longer to get used to using the tool, but eventually, I got the hang of it. And I ended up fixing all of the crevasses with the tool!! I did it! To be honest, I surprised myself!!

ある日曜日の夜、家でくつろいでいると電話が鳴った。パートナーが電話を取って、「もしもし？ああ、わかった、すぐ下りるよ！」そう言って電話を切るや否や、彼は靴を履いてドアから飛び出して行った。“何があったんだろう？”僕は彼が何をしているのか皆目見当がつかず、彼が戻ってくるのを待っていた。程なくして彼が帰って来て、「何で下りて行ったかわかるかい？」と言ったので「ああ、全然わからないよ」と僕が言うと、彼がニコニコ顔でおかしな形をした道具を見せてくれた。「何これ？何のための物なんだい？」僕はそれが一体何なのかさっぱりわからなかった。彼は、「デトマーがフローロングの修理にって持って来てくれたんだ」と言った。そう、それはフローリングを修理するための道具だったのだ。どうしたことか、暖炉の前あたりのフローリングの板の数枚がずれ始め、それぞれの板の間に隙間が出来たのだ。僕らはその板をもとの位置に戻そうとしたが、とても固くて動かすことができなかった。過日、デトマーがそれをチェックしにやってきて、大きなハンマーと特別の道具でそれを直そうとしたが、うまくいかなかった。彼はこういった隙間を直すための、もう一つの特別でよりうまくいく道具を家に持っているが、そのとき見つけられなかったのだと言った。彼はついにその道具も見つけたらしい。「わあ、すごいね！これでついに隙間を直せるね！」僕は興奮し、彼はすぐにその道具を使い始めた。しかし、残念ながらそれはその時またもやうまくいかなかった。その道具を使うにはハンマーを使わなければならず、ハンマーでそれを叩く時に大きな音がした。すでに夕方になりかけていたので、僕らは大きな音がお隣さんに迷惑をかけるかもしれないと思い、その道具を使うのを諦めた。次の日、パートナーが学校へ仕事に出かけた後、僕はその道具を使ってみることにした。その日はウィークデーの朝だったので、音を出すのに神経質になる必要はなかった。なぜなら殆どの人らは仕事に出かけているはずだったからだ。その道具を使うのに慣れるのにちょっと時間はかかったが、やがてコツを飲み込んだ。そして僕は最終的に全ての隙間をその道具で直したのだ！やった！正直言って、自分に驚いてしまった！
