When I was preparing to attend the watercolur painting class at the community centre one day, Rob came to me and handed me a small card and said, “Mary asked me to give this to you.” “What is this?”, I looked at the card and I realized that it was an invitation card. It said that our painting buddies, Mary and Anne were going to hold a “Drinks & Nibbles” at Mary’s place after the class next Friday. “Oh, wow, how kind of them!” I was a little surprised that I was invited to the party because I didn’t expect it at all. Rob was invited, too, of course. In the middle of the class, I went to Mary and thanked her for her kindness. She said she was glad to hear that I could come to the party. Mary and I are contemporaries at the painting class. I started taking the course in March in 2006 and she started one week after I started. She is British and she and her husband came to Vancouver because of her husband’s work 2 years ago. I like her warm and cheerful personality very much, but I always have trouble with her strong British accent. One day, she said she used to be a teacher and I wasn’t surprised to hear that because she is always very talkative! Next Friday, we took the class in the morning as usual. The class finished at 12:30 and Jan and I got into Rob’s car and we headed for Mary’s place. As her condominium was not that far from the community centre, we got there shortly. When we knocked on the door, she opened it and said “Welcome, guys!” with a broad smile. We noticed that other painting buddies were there already and they were busy chatting with drinks. Then the luncheon party started. She prepared various kinds of cheese and crackers and a lot of nibbles. Rob and I asked for red wine and it went well with the food. We had a very nice chat with our buddies and I really enjoyed myself. I ended up drinking four glasses of red wine and I felt a little drunk at the end of the party. Thank you for inviting us, Mary and Anne!! |

We’re now in Christmas & New Year’s holidays, so I’ll start my journal at the beginning of January in 2008. |

When I was checking my inbox, I found an Email from Apple Computer. It was an ad and it said that they were going to hold “One Day Shopping” event on their website. As I had never heard that Mac had a sale on their products, I was interested in it and I decided to check their website on that day. I thought it might be time for my partner to get a new computer because his computer was already 4 years old. When I told him about it, he didn’t seem to be interested in it at all and he said he didn’t need a new one because his present one still worked well and he was satisfied with using it overall. However, a few days later, he told me that he’d changed his mind. He said that it might be a good chance to get a new one because he can burn DVDs with it. His present one didn’t have the function and he really needed it for his new teaching curriculum. Every time he needed to burn DVDs, he used to ask Ditmar to help him with his computer. On that night, I stayed up late to check the website--- they announced that the sale was supposed to start at 0:00 A.M. I visited the website at midnight, but I couldn't open it. It said that we should wait for awhile because too many people were trying to access the website. I had to wait for about an hour, but I finally could get connected. When I started checking the price of the new MacBook, I was very surprised because they gave us a big discount. So, I woke my partner up and told that he should get one and he did successfully. Two weeks later, the brand new computer was delivered and he was excited to get it. Then he told me, “By the way, I was thinking about what to do with my old computer and one good idea occurred to me. I think we should give it to David. What do you think?” David is his old friend and we knew he didn’t have his own computer. “Oh, it’s a great idea! I agree with you!”, I said and he called him at once. David seemed to be excited to hear our offer. Listening to their chat on the phone, I thought it was worth buying the new computer because the old one would help another person. This is a good example of recycling, I thought. |
