The hospital was evacuated and the station bombed. Of course the dropping of the warning note was left out of the accounts of bombing the hospital which were carried in our papers; at least nothing was said about this in any of the accounts I read. I asked Clear about the stories concerning Japanese atrocities. He said he had seen Philippine soldiers bayoneted by Japs after they had raised their arms in surrender, and that in the heat of battle little quarter could be expected. ・・・・・・・・・・・ ・・日本軍は米袋の中に通信文を入れて投下した。明日、病院に隣接する放送局（発電所？）を爆撃するので、病院を引き払うようにと勧告してあった。患者は連れ出され、放送局は爆撃を受けた。勿論、本国の新聞に掲載された病院爆撃の記事で、警告文の投下が抜けていたことは断るまでもない。少なくとも自分の読んだ新聞記事には、そのような話はかけらも出ていなかった。 私はクーリア大佐に日本軍の残虐行為に関する話を問い質してみた。フィリピンの兵士が降伏の両手を挙げた後で日本軍に銃剣で刺殺されるのを目撃したことがあり、戦闘の真只中では慈悲はあまり期待できないものだという。一方、経験の示すところによれば、降伏が事前に折衝された場合には、日本軍から理性的な配慮が期待できるとのことであった。 −−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−
