私達は「天国と地獄の差は、紙一重」という伝統的な教訓を、どこかで聞いたことがあるでしょう。
実際、それは“真実”です。何故なら、「気付くか、気付かないか」の差です。“真実”は、とってもシンプルです。そして、それを選択する事は、誰にでも出来ます。
例えば、天国への門は、シンプルに、怒りをぶつけるのではなく、
「許して、親切に振舞う」だけで開かれます。
そこには、知能、身体能力、性格といった遺伝（カルマ）による限界、すなわち“占い”さえも超越できる能力があります。そして、その能力は、私達人間のみが持っているものです。

その意識レベルを超える
第一章恥と絶望（レベル20またはそれ未満）（19）

超越
絶望のどん底において、エネルギーは消耗します。そしてまだ生き残る意思は存在します。しかし、自我（ego/動物的自我/小さな自己）は、ひどい地獄の穴の中で、完全に身を委ねるだけで、しばしば差し迫った肉体の死の瞬間から、甦る事さえあります。極端な限りのない断末魔の苦しみの中で、魂は、「もし神が存在するならば、私を助けてください」と懇願するでしょう。そして大きな意識の変容は起こります。これは禅宗の教えの真理で「天国と地獄の距離は、わずか10分の1インチ（0.254cm）である」と認めています。奇妙にも、人間の肉体の死（自我は藁をも掴もうとする）でさえ含まれ、神は存在しないと思わせて、死は本当であるとする幻の支配に対して、じたばたする自我は、神を悪者に仕立て上げようと、この最後の瞬間でさえ、影響を与えるでしょう。
恥の二元性
恥は、大きな自己（ハイヤーセルフ/真我/アートマン）と、小さな自己（動物的自我）の真実を否定した結果から生れます。普通の人生というのは、はかないものです。そして深刻な肉体的生存を脅かしている時でさえ、一般的な意識レベルでは、こころの進歩にとって、その誤った認識が、大きな障害である事を、示しています。
Transcendence
At the bottom of despair, there is the exhaustionof energy and even the will to survive. It is often in the very pits of Helland absolute despair that the ego can be surrendered, even right up ti thepoint of imminent physical death. In extreme, timeless agony, the soul mayentreat, “If there is a God, I ask him for help,” and a great transformation occurs.This confirms the truth of the Zen teaching, “Heaven and hell are onlyone-tenth of an inch apart.” Bizarrely, the ego may reach this point as anattempt to make God wrong, including even one’s physical death (the ego willgrasp at any straw), and thus, even in the last moment, the ego struggles topower that death is a reality and that God is not.
The Dualities of Shame
Shame is a consequence of the negation ofthe realities of and Self. It’s transitory in normal life but denotes a verymajor obstacle to spiritual evolution as a prevailing level of consciousness,and when threatens physical survival.
