デンマークのジャンテロウ　２

　ヤンテは架空の村です。1933年にデンマークのアクセル・サンダモセの小説に出てきます。この小説は当時のデンマーク人に対する風刺だったようです。当時のデンマークの社会はいわば「悪しき平等主義」に陥って、現状を打破しようという試みを抑制しようとする傾向があったのでしょうか。

　サンダモセはこの風潮を苦々しく思い、改革しようとしたようです。ヤンテ村を当時のデンマークの縮図として描きました。ヤンテ村は村人に対して、"あなたはたいしたことないんだから成功しても思い上がるな"という考えを強要するため、こんな法律を作ってしまったな村だったのです。

　Jante Law（ジャンテロウ）がデンマーク人の間に浸透したのではありません。サンダモセが風刺したにもかかわらずデンマーク人の気質は変わらなかったのです。しかし、皮肉なものです。現代においては、この気質がデンマーク人をして世界一幸せな国民としているのです。
