天皇陛下に名誉学員の称号

両陛下は２３日、生き物の分類学の基礎を築いたスウェーデン出身の生物学者リンネの母校、ウプサラ大学を訪問し、リンネの生誕３００年を記念する式典に出席されました。

両陛下は、皇太子時代の昭和６０年にスウェーデンを訪れた際にもこの大学を訪問されています。

式典では、はじめにハルベリ学長が「この式典がわれわれの自然に対する興味を呼び覚まし、新しい世代が自然に好奇心を抱くことになればと願います」とあいさつしました。

続いて、魚類分類学者の天皇陛下に対する「名誉学員」の称号の授与式が行われ、学長からメダルの付いた首飾りと証書が贈られました。

このあと、天皇陛下が名誉学員になられたことを記念するオーケストラの演奏が行われました。

これに先立って、大学近くの大聖堂でもリンネの記念式典が開かれ、両陛下はグスタフ国王夫妻とともにリンネの墓碑の前で立ち止まり、静かに墓碑を眺められました。

そして、大きな鐘の音を合図に、両陛下は式典の参加者やウプサラ大学の学生らとともに大学までの道を行進されました。

両陛下は、およそ５０００人の学生や市民が見守る中、沿道に並んだボーイスカウトやガールスカウトから敬礼を受け、笑顔で手を振りながら歩かれていました。

Emperor receives degree from Linneaus' alma mater

Japan's Emperor, now visiting Sweden with the Empress, has received an honorary degree from the alma mater of Swedish botanist and zoologist Carolus Linnaeus.

On Wednesday, the Emperor and Empress attended a ceremony at Uppsala University to mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Linnaeus. Linnaeus is known for his contribution to the establishment of the taxonomy of animals and plants.

The Imperial couple previously visited the university in 1985, before the Emperor ascended the throne.

At the ceremony, Uppsala University Vice-Chancellor Anders Hallberg said the university hopes the tribute will raise interest in nature, and inspire a new generation to take up studies in the field.

The Emperor, a scholar on fish taxonomy, was awarded a medal and certificate and named an honorary member of Uppsala University.

Sweden is the Imperial couple's first leg of a 5-nation European tour that will take them to the 3 Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, as well as Britain.
