Why worry about a speck in the eye of a brother when you have a board in your own? Mathew 7-3
I heard mind-boggling ABC news, Australian radio news, which said, ¡ÈChina is going to seal a deal to import the meat of kangaroo from Australia.¡É What? If I am wrong, please correct me. Australia is going to slaughter, process and sell the really cute indigenous animal, symbol of Australia, to China for money? I can¡Çt accept such cruel, violent and inhumane action. How are they killed? How long does it take? Are they free from pain when they are killed?
When I heard this news, a picture came up in my mind. It shows some Australian high officials wine and dine Chinese mandarins. Underneath, some kangaroos are crying and bleeding. Behind them are some Russians pinching their noses. Other image was that a kangaroo is to be crucified with a sign saying,¡Éhigh protein and tasty delicacy.¡É Behind them a Roman wearing coonskin cap washing his hands, may be with vodka. Such pictures won¡Çt be on newspaper, but someone may edit and update some videos like that on YouTube. It can be a splash hit. Anything like that won¡Çt do you good from the point of public relation, so personally I would like to recommend Australia not to let it go at that. Of course I don¡Çt mean to increase censorship but to stop the deal.
I am not throwing stones from a glass house. Although Japanese whaling industry bare the blunt of criticism, it basically complies with the rules set by IWC and submits meticulous report of its investigations. They do what they have to do. IWC also admits or recommends making full use of the whales after the research. On the contrary, I heard the condemned captain of Sea Shepherd was released with 5 years of suspension. See what it means.
Also I want to appreciate the input in the movie, ¡ÈCove¡É. As the movie shared with us, there is a fact that dolphins may not be a risk-free seafood for Japanese because of the mercury contamination triggered by biological concentration. As I was not aware of it, it was an eye-opener. In addition, some Japanese who have eaten dolphins on a regular basis have higher mercury concentrations in their hair according to Japanese Media. Having said that, what they eat there is, fair to say, none of their business. It is like soda, fast food and Tobacco. It is barely understandable if they live in the small village and worry about the collapse of healthcare system or surging medical cost in the restricted area because of mercury contamination, but they have no right to say something about it. If people living there feel it is bad for their health, they will stop eating. In a nutshell, just leave it as it is. If it is for the sake of wild animal, how about kangaroo?
I¡Çll make a great concession; some people may say Japan and Australia are the same breed on this topic. OK, but Australia can¡Çt criticize Japan, because we are in the same position to be stoned. It is ugly to see a quarrel over ¡ÈWhich is more sinful?¡É between two men who are going to be executed. At least, as far as I know, I have seen some Japanese express their anger toward Australian inconsistent behavior, but I have never seen some Japanese demonstrating against kangaroo mass killing for export (except what I am writing). How about the counterpart¡Ä?
I am not saying Japanese are right and Skippy are wrong, because we also make mistakes. But let me say just one thing, you shouldn¡Çt shelve your own issue and turn blind eyes on it, which runs counter to common sense.
