ジョン・レノン命日〜Happy Xmas（War Is Over）〜暗殺仮説

今日１２月８日は、日本では長らく真珠湾奇襲（１９４１）記念日と認識されていたが、近頃はジョン・レノン命日として話題に上ることが目立つようだ。

 

前者は戦争の開始であり、後者は反戦の象徴のようである。

 

正直言って、ジョン・レノンについては殆ど知らない。ロック・グループ（？）ビートルズのメンバーだとは何と無く聞き及んでいたが、彼らの歌も碌に聴いたことが無い。

 

そんな門外漢の目にも彼に関する新聞記事が入る。クリスマスが近い時期ということもあるのか。

 

彼の“Happy Xmas（War Is Over）”が正に季節の歌だ。かの大合唱団も某ホテルでのクリスマス・コンサートにこれを歌うそうだ。という訳で、少しお勉強をしてみた。

 

“　レノンのソロデビュー曲「平和を我等にGive Peace a Chance」が1969年、ビートルズ解散が大阪万博の1970年、Happy Xmasが71年、そして代表作「イマジンImagine」が72年、一連のメッセージソング”そうだ。

“平易な英文ながらも、深く考えさせられる言葉”だそうだ。

 

彼の遭難の真相についても、色々な説があるのだろうか。

 

大衆に強い影響力を持つ彼の反戦姿勢を嫌った某国政府による暗殺であるという仮説は説得力が有る。しかし、検証不可能であるのは、世に数ある魅力的な仮説と同様だ。

 

彼は弱冠４０歳で亡くなったのだなあ。
