"The Band Kept Playing" The Elctric Flag

なぜか語られないスワンプ・ロックの名盤 THE ELECTRIC FLAG "The Band Kept Playing" (1974 ATLANTIC)である。ELECTRIC FLAG と言えば1968年シカゴブルース色の強い"A Long Time Comin'" や1969年の"The Electric Flag: An American Music Band"は Mike Bloomfield の話題やHarvey Brooksを擁しBob Dylanのセッション・ミュージシャンとしての話題と共に時として語られたが…。その後6年の時を経過し再結成されたTHE ELECTRIC FLAGの示したアメリカン・ロックへの道筋はまさに王道のスワンプ・ロックの軌跡と言って過言では無いと僕は思う。

Billy Swan は1942年ミズリ−州に生まれ。エルビス・プレスリーに憧れ音楽の道に進み、1962年にオリジナル曲"Lover Please"をThe Drifters のリード・ボーカリストClyde McPhatterに取り上げられ大ヒットし、念願の音楽ビジネス業界入りを果たした。
60年代は主にソングライター、ロ-ディ、スタジオのアシスタント・エンジニアなどを行ない、トニー・ジョー・ホワイトがモニュメント・レコードに残したアルバム3枚のプロデュースなども手掛けるまでに成長する。その後クリス・クリトファーソンのバック・バンドなどを経て、1974年にソロ・シングルとしてリリースした「アイ・キャン・ヘルプ」が、全米NO.1に輝く大ヒットとなり、77年までにモニュメント・レコードからアルバムを4枚発表しています。今日ご紹介するのは彼の第４作目Billy Swan "Four" (1977 CBS /MONUMENT)で文句なしのMuscle Shoals録音です。

Bruce Channel "Stand Up"

先日、知り合いから、Bruce Channelの"Stand Up"と言う、僕も全く知らなかったアーチストのCDを頂いた。「感謝！」
彼は1960年代初頭のメンフィスのロックミュージシャンで1962年に" Hey Baby"と言うシングルを出している人だそうである。その際、ブルースハープを演奏していたのがDelbert McClintonだったとのことであった。曲想はブルース・ロック・カントリー・ケイジャンなどの要素を盛り込んだルーズなスタイルであったらしい。
彼の曲" Hey Baby"がヒットしたのはイギリスで1962年にDelbert McClintonを伴いイギリスのツアーを行っている。
彼らの演奏に興味を示したのは、なんとビートルズのジョン･レノンでハーモニカの演奏方法について彼らと長時間話し合いを行ない、 "Please, Please Me" と "Love Me Do"に使われたジョンのブルースハープの演奏方法は彼らのアイデアが元になっているとのことであった。
1978年頃からナッシュビルに移り住みソングライターとして活動し、T. G. Shepherd, Janie Frickie, John Conlee, Anne Murray, Mel McDaniel などに曲を提供していたとのこと。その後 Alabama, The Oak Ridge Boys, Jerry lee Lewis, Tom Jones, Kieran Kane なども彼らのカバー曲取り上げるまでになっていたそうである。
本作"Stand Up"は1995年にメンフィスで録音されたもので、Icehouse Recordsでの一作目はDon Nixのアルバム"Back To The Well"だったとのこと。このアルバムではプロデューサーに関するクレジットはどこにも書いておらず、Don Nixの作品が三曲もオリジナルに近い形で入っていることや、バックミュージシャンに共通点があることなどから、Don Nixが製作に関わっているらしいと思われるとのことであった。
余談ではありますが、再編The Bandの1996年の"High On The Hog"というアルバムで、このタイトル曲"Stand Up"が取り上げられています。

なんでここでエルビスなの？何で？エルビス･プレスリーを記事に･･･。とお思いの方も多いと思いますが、スタジオやセッションミュージシャンでお気づきの通りこの二枚の録音と参加ミュージシャンは前述のアメリカンスタジオのハウスバンドのメンバーなのです。プロデューサーはもちろん Chips Moman さんです（＾＾
彼らは Bobby Womack･Wilson Pickett･Arthur Alexander･Oscar Toney, Jr.などのバックを勤めたスタジオミュージシャン達なのです。

ELVIS PRESLEY のこれらのアルバムに対するコメントを紹介しておきます。
