＜歴史が、もしわれわれに何ものかを教えることができるとすれば、武徳の上に建設された国家は、例えスパルタのような都市国家であれ、ローマのような大帝国であれ、この地上に「永遠の都」を保持することはできないということである。人間の中にある闘争本能は、自然であってかつ普遍性をもっており、それが高尚な感性や男らしい徳性を生むものであるとしても、それだけでは完全なる人格を形成することはできない。闘争の本能のかげには、より神聖な本能が潜んでいる。それは愛である。
